You set a distance you can realistically travel. The next profile would turn a quick drink into a weekend trip. After enough irrelevant suggestions, it is tempting to buy an upgrade just to make the app listen.
Before spending anything, separate three questions: What range did I choose? Are exceptions allowed? Where does this search start? This guide turns those questions into a short settings audit for Tinder and Hinge.
1. Check what your dating app filters actually allow
A useful way to read a preference is: “prioritize this.” A strict limit means: “exclude results beyond this.” The slider alone does not tell you which instruction you have given.

On Hinge, read the checkbox before changing it
Hinge’s July 27, 2026 instructions use Flexible. Checking “Show profiles outside of this preference” permits exceptions. Leave that box unchecked for a firm preference, then save. Gender remains strict and cannot be made flexible.
If an older tutorial tells you to enable a Dealbreaker, do not copy the checkmark blindly: a checkbox that allows exceptions has the opposite meaning. Read the wording shown in your version. The current Hinge guide is the reference for these steps.
On Tinder, inspect the controls below the sliders
Tinder says it may offer people outside your age or distance preferences, particularly when recommendations within those ranges run out. Open Discovery and inspect the controls underneath both sliders. Set them according to their wording so that unwanted range expansion is disabled. Tinder documents the behavior but does not give a universal numeric definition of “slightly.” Source: Tinder.
2. Check the location behind the distance
A perfectly chosen radius can still be centered on the wrong place.
Hinge says your location does not update automatically when you log in. After moving or traveling, open your photo icon, the pencil icon, then My Vitals → Location. Adjust the map using search or the compass and save with the back arrow. Its July 30, 2026 guide also says distance is strict by default unless you allow outside profiles. Also distinguish someone’s Location from their Hometown. Hinge displays both, but hometown describes where they are from. A distant hometown alone does not establish a broken distance filter. A chosen neighborhood is also not proof of someone’s live physical whereabouts. Source and location controls.
Tinder gives a different explanation for some faraway profiles: other people may use Passport to look in your area. It also says subscribers who recently changed location may see people from the previous city for up to 24 hours. These are documented possibilities, not a diagnosis of a particular profile. 3. Run a clean check before paying
Use this editorial checklist to avoid changing everything at once:
- Name the mismatch. Is it age, distance or a different preference? Record the actual value you selected.
- Record the exception setting. Note its exact wording and whether it is enabled. A screenshot of your own settings can help.
- Confirm the search origin. Note recent travel or a deliberate location change.
- Change one relevant control and save. Reopen the setting to check that your selection stayed in place.
- Inspect new recommendations. Keep existing matches and incoming likes separate in your notes; this guide does not establish identical filtering rules for every app surface.
Do not treat a short recommendation list as a reason to abandon a boundary that matters to you. Equally, do not use the first unusual profile as evidence that a subscription is necessary. Decide what you need the paid feature to do, then check whether it actually offers that function.
If the same mismatch keeps happening
Send support a compact description: app version, phone operating system, the screen where it occurs, selected range, exception setting, approximate search area and time of the last change. Say what you expected and what appeared instead.
Use settings screenshots where possible. If a profile image is needed to demonstrate the issue, obscure identifying details before sharing it. Keep the request focused on the mismatch rather than another person’s identity. Use the support link in the app or its official help center.

Conclusion: set the boundary before buying more features
Your next step is a settings check, not an automatic upgrade. Establish the range you want, whether exceptions are enabled, and where the search begins. If those are right and the mismatch persists, you have a clear support case instead of another evening spent guessing.
You do not have to make every preference rigid. Choose deliberately which ones are flexible and which ones would make a date impractical. The goal is a feed you can make sense of, with limits you have actually chosen.
